His & Hers by Alice Feeney: The review

It has taken me this long to jump on the Alice Feeney bandwagon, because I am a fool. While it’s terrible I’ve been sleeping on incredible thrillers for so long, I’m genuinely excited about the back catalogue that awaits me. Because if the rest of Alice’s books are even half as good as His & Hers, I’m in for a treat.

Anna is a reporter. Jack is a detective. They arrive at the same crime scene: a woman is found murdered in the woods. Anna wants a scoop, and Jack’s there to bring the victim to justice. One problem: she’s an old friend of Anna’s. And Jack was with her the night she died. Oh, and Jack and Anna used to be married.

That’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the web of uncomfortable connections that forms as you read through His & Hers. Told through both the perspectives of Jack and Anna, and a third unknown voice, you’re never quite sure who you can trust. After all, everyone has their own secrets that they can’t afford to be found out. Is Jack telling the truth when he says he had nothing to do with the murder? Is Anna?

When another body turns up, the links to Anna grow deeper, and we learn about her time as a teenager. Told through flashbacks and retellings, these are perhaps the most harrowing sections of His & Hers. I thought my teenage friends were bad, but I was positively lucky in comparison. All I can say is: holy sh*t.

There are twists, turns and deceptions aplenty throughout His & Hers, and I’ve loved every moment of it. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my time with the book, it’s that Alice is an incredible thriller writer. She’s masterfully crafted characters that you come to care for yet still can’t fully trust. You’ll be glued to the page as you try and work out the big ‘whodunnit’: I had an inkling towards the end but still enjoyed the payoff.

This is a truly fantastic read, and surely a must for any thriller fan. Oh, and there’s a Netflix adaptation coming soon: I can’t wait!
