Eleven years ago, my husband disappeared. Eleven long hard years I waited, my heart breaking for our son, who didn’t know his father was coming back.
Today, my hands shake as I try to understand what I’ve just learned: my husband has a new wife. This wasn’t part of our plan.
Eleven years ago, my husband made a terrible mistake. I sacrificed everything to help him fix it. But now he’s put our son and me in danger again.
We had a plan. He broke the rules. But who will pay the price?
The Married Man by K.L. Slater — The review
The Married Man tells the story of Liv, a single mum whose husband went missing 11 years ago. There’s also Cait, who thinks her own husband is hiding big secrets from her. Liv’s husband Rich has been declared dead, but only she knows the truth — or does she? As the two women meet and their worlds collide, their secrets might be even bigger than they realised…
I’ve read (and listened to) quite a few K. L. Slater books now and The Married Man is up there with my favourites. It’s not as formulaic as some of her others and while I saw some of the twists coming, as a whole it kept me guessing as new layers of the story keep unravelling. It has a surprisingly emotional ending too, which came as quite a surprise, and I very much appreciated it.
Although she has flaws, I found myself rooting for Liv, and while I sometimes wanted to grab hold of her teenage son Maddox and tell him to stop being stupid, he’s ultimately likeable and believable too. After all, what teenage boy doesn’t do questionable things from time to time? As for Cait, her story is perhaps the most interesting, and as the two women become connected with each other, you’ll be turning the pages quicker and quicker to find out just what is going on.
Like most of her books, The Married Man is an easy to read, very digestible story from Slater which I thoroughly enjoyed. I listened to this via Audible and, as always, Claire Corbett does a wonderful job narrating; she’s perhaps the main reason why I enjoy listening to K. L. Slater’s books so much. If you’ve read any of her others, pick this one up: you won’t be disappointed. And if you haven’t? She’s the perfect author for fans of crime, thriller and mystery that never get too heavy or violent.
