Blurb: My husband Matt and I are an ordinary married couple in every way but one. At the end of each day, we return to our own homes and our own spaces. Some people think this arrangement is odd, but for us it’s perfect.

But beyond the fairy lights I string at my window, darkness is pressing in. Two local women have gone missing, and I don’t want to be alone. With Matt away for work, I find comfort in chatting to my new neighbour Brenda, who drops in regularly with casseroles and groceries.

Sipping our coffees, looking out of my kitchen window, I soon notice how observant Brenda is. So when she tells me that perhaps my husband isn’t simply working late, something cold takes root. I think of Matt’s recent vague tone, the way he brushes off my questions. Brenda thinks I should pop by when Matt’s not at home. Just to check everything’s as it should be.

I should be able to trust the man I married. But when I do go through my husband’s things, I discover that our perfect living arrangement is hiding a shocking secret…

My Husband Next Door by K.L. Slater: The review

It has been a while since I’ve read a K.L. Slater novel. Sure, The Lucky Winners wasn’t bad, but it felt like something a bit different from Slater. My Husband Next Door, though? It’s got all those key ingredients. A mother who’s a little too involved? Check! Nosey neighbours? Check! Family members who you can’t quite trust? Check, check, check! Throw in a missing person, brilliant cameos from recurring police detectives, and so many secrets that you won’t know who to believe right until the end, and this may just be one of my favourite K.L. Slater books yet.

This is primarily the story of Sylvie, her daughter Jess, her husband Matt, and her new neighbour, Brenda. She has a unique living arrangement with Matt, in that they both have their own houses on the same street. Unorthodox, but it works for them. But Brenda, who immediately becomes too involved in Sylvie’s life, doesn’t like it. She doesn’t trust Matt one bit. Is she just a bit of a busybody, or is there something more sinister to her neighbourliness?

In the background, there’s also a missing person in the news; someone Jess went to school with. It’s a worry, having their quiet neighbourhood no longer feeling safe. And when Jess’ close friend goes missing too, maybe it’s a crime much closer to home.

There are so many layers to My Husband Next Door, and that’s what makes it so gripping. Without the police investigation into the missing person – which is great by itself – the over-friendliness of Brenda is unsettling, some of her actions genuinely making my skin crawl. At the same time, Jess is acting odd, Sylvie is the typical overbearing mother, and maybe Brenda has a point about Matt… this is the type of book where you won’t really know who to trust right until the end. Slater has wonderfully woven together multiple plots to create one story that will keep you guessing, and once you’ve started, it’s hard to put down.

A moreish, compelling read, and highly recommended for anyone wanting something easy and thrilling to read. It’s great on audio, too!
