Blurb: “Anne Evans was a ‘nuisance caller’. She would repetitively dial 999 in desperate panic, screaming down the phone that ‘he’ was going to burn her alive…
But after years of false alarms, people stopped listening. Now, as the smoke clears, DCI Liz Field can only watch helplessly as Anne’s charred home collapses, her body still trapped inside.
The blaze leaves scant evidence behind, but the more Field’s team uncover in the rubble, the more disturbing the case becomes. This wasn’t merely arson, it was murder, tailored to the victim’s worst nightmare.
Everyone thought Anne was just a paranoid recluse. But is it really paranoia, if all that you feared comes true?”
Nothing Left Behind by Hannah Brennan: The review
No Safe Place was one of my favourite debuts of 2025, and so it’s no surprise that Brennan’s follow-up, Nothing Left Behind, has been one of my most anticipated reads of this year. It didn’t disappoint: reuniting with DCI Liz Field has been a joy, and the case that Nothing Left Behind focuses on is dark, jaw-dropping and utterly intriguing.
Brennan has proved herself as a very capable author, crafting a story that is both human and relatable but also thrilling and devastating. Field is a great lead character, although we also get to know more about her team this time around. Their personal lives play second fiddle to the case at hand, though: a house fire that takes the life of an elderly woman and leaves her neighbours homeless.
It’s a devastating premise and one that immediately grabs you simply because of how hauntingly believable it is. It’s something we’ve all undoubtedly all thought about before; the worst case scenario of your home burning down. But here, there’s the added plot point that our victim, Anne Evans, was a known nuisance caller to 999, having complained about receiving threats to burn her house down for years. And when it finally happens, DCI Field and her team have quite the case on their hands.
Nothing Left Behind can be read as a standalone, but I’d highly recommend reading No Safe Place first – just because it’s so good. This sequel has secured the DCI Field series as one of my favourites, and any new entries in the series will be instant day one purchases for me – as will anything from Hannah Brennan. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
